Frequently Asked Questions
What is a BIMI record?
A BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) record is a DNS TXT record published at default._bimi.yourdomain.com that tells email clients where to find your brand logo for display in the inbox. It requires DMARC enforcement (p=quarantine or p=reject) to be active on your domain. The record contains a v=BIMI1 version tag and an l= field pointing to your SVG logo file hosted at an HTTPS URL.
What SVG format does BIMI require?
BIMI logos must be in SVG Tiny P/S format — a strict subset of SVG defined in the BIMI specification. The file must be self-contained (no external image references), square in aspect ratio, and hosted at a publicly accessible HTTPS URL. Use a BIMI SVG validator to confirm your file meets the specification before publishing the record. Tools like Inkscape can export SVG Tiny-compatible files.
Do I need a VMC (Verified Mark Certificate) for BIMI?
A VMC is required by some email providers (notably Gmail) but not all. Apple Mail and some others display BIMI logos without a VMC. A VMC is a certificate from a Mark Verifying Authority (DigiCert, Entrust) that proves your organisation owns the trademark for the displayed logo. The a= field in your BIMI record points to your VMC file. Without a VMC, only providers that do not require certificate validation will show your logo.
How do I verify my BIMI record is working?
After publishing the BIMI record, send a test email from your domain to a Gmail account (which requires VMC) or an Apple Mail account. If BIMI is correctly configured, your logo appears next to the sender name in the inbox. You can also use a BIMI checker tool to query the DNS record and validate the SVG URL is reachable and returns a valid BIMI-compliant SVG file.
