Frequently Asked Questions

What is BIMI?

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) is an email standard that allows organisations to display their logo in the email client's inbox next to authenticated messages. It builds on top of DMARC enforcement — your domain must have a DMARC policy of quarantine or reject. You publish a BIMI TXT record at default._bimi.yourdomain.com pointing to an SVG logo file hosted at a public HTTPS URL.

What is a VMC and do I need one?

A VMC (Verified Mark Certificate) is a certificate issued by a Mark Verifying Authority (MVA) that cryptographically proves your organisation owns the trademark for the logo you display. VMCs are required by some email clients (notably Gmail) to display the BIMI logo. Other providers like Apple Mail display BIMI logos without VMC. VMCs are issued by organisations like DigiCert and Entrust and require trademark registration.

What format must my BIMI logo be in?

BIMI logos must be in SVG Tiny P/S format — a strict subset of SVG defined in the BIMI specification. The file must be a valid SVG, must be self-contained (no external references), must have a square aspect ratio, and must be hosted at a publicly accessible HTTPS URL. Tools like the BIMI SVG validator can check if your logo file meets the specification before you publish your BIMI record.

Why is my BIMI logo not showing in Gmail?

Gmail requires a valid VMC (Verified Mark Certificate) to display BIMI logos — a BIMI record alone is not sufficient. Additionally, your domain must pass DMARC with a policy of quarantine or reject, and the sending message must pass both SPF/DKIM alignment. If your VMC is valid and DMARC is enforced, check that the BIMI record is published correctly at default._bimi.yourdomain.com and that the SVG file meets the BIMI SVG specification.
